The Percentage of Children Born Through IVF Every Year

A blue and green pie chart

When my son was born after successful IVF treatment, I started to wonder exactly how many other IVF babies there were and what percentage they made of the total number of children born. So I found the numbers and calculated the percentage of children born through IVF every year. Here are the results:

Graph showing the percentage of babies born through ART in the world by year

The lowest estimated percentage of children born in the world through Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) the majority of which is IVF, was 0.17% in 2003, 0.29% in 2010 and 0.44% in 2016. While this number is small – because it takes the whole world into account including countries where IVF is not so common, it has almost tripled between 2003 and 2016.

For those who like all the precise details, the table below lists the exact numbers.

The numbers for ART babies born come from the International Committee Monitoring Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ICMART) which can be found here. The total number of births come from the Our World in Data website which can be found here, and the percentages were calculated by excel.

I also wanted to see the numbers for specific countries: USA, UK, Australia & New Zealand (their numbers are reported together), Canada, Japan & Russia, and see if that added any information. As you’ll see, it did.

Percentage of Children Born through IVF Each Year in the USA

Graph showing the percentage of infants born through ART in the USA by year

The numbers for the USA alone are much higher than those for the world as a whole. The lowest percentage of children born through ART in the USA in 2000, is almost twice as much as the highest world percentage in 2016 and the USA percentage has more than doubled between 2000 and 2018 making its highest percentage almost five times higher than the highest world percentage.

Interestingly, while the number of children born through ART is increasing each year with one exception, the total number of births in the USA has been decreasing since 2007 contributing to the increase in the percentage of children born through ART.

The number of ART babies come from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) which can be found here. The total number of births come from statista.com and can be found here.

Percentage of Children Born through IVF Each Year in the UK

Graph showing the percentage of babies born through IVF in the UK by year

The UK percentages are not only higher than the world percentages they’re also slightly higher than the USA one too. Again, the percentage of children born through IVF between 2000 and 2018 has approximately doubled although interestingly it decreased between 2017 and 2018. Since the number of IVF births also decreased during that time, this may indicate the start of a new trend but we’ll need the next few years data to say for sure (we’re still waiting for those numbers – it takes a few years before they’re ready).

Percentage of Children Born through IVF Each Year in Australia & New Zealand

Graph showing the percentage of babies born through IVF in Australia & New Zealand by year

While it’s of no surprise that the percentages of children born through ART / IVF in the USA and the UK each year are higher than that of the world as a whole, it is surprising that the percentages of children born through IVF in Australia and New Zealand each year are higher still – about one percent more than the UK and approximately double that of the USA!

These higher than the USA and UK percentages of children born through IVF each year is even more remarkable when you take into account the fact that total births in Australia and New Zealand have not been increasing steadily since 2008 but have instead been fluctuating up and down.

The number of IVF babies come from the Australia and New Zealand Assisted Reproduction Database (ANZARD) which can be found here. The total number of births come from the Australian Bureau of Statistics which can be found here and Stats NZ which can be found here.

Percentage of Children Born through IVF Each Year in Japan

Graph showing the percentage of babies born through ART in Japan by year

The percentage of children born through ART in Japan was a mere 1.03% in 2000 but reached a stunning 6.20% in 2018. That’s an increase of just over six times! Some of this may be due to the fact that the number of total births shrank by more than 270,000 over this time frame. Still 6.20% of births being from ART is an impressive number especially when compared with the numbers from the USA and the UK.

Percentage of Children Born through IVF Each Year in Russia

Percentage of babies born through ART in Russia by year

The percentage of children born through ART in Russia was lower than that for the world in 2003 and although by 2018 this number only rose to 2.37% it is the greatest increase (19 times!) for any country that I looked at.

Some Concrete Takeaways From All the Numbers

There are a number of things that we can see from the numbers presented:

  • While the percentage of children born through IVF across the whole world was only 0.17% in 2003, by 2016 it almost tripled to 0.44%.
  • These percentages are much higher for all the countries I looked at separately.
  • This is despite the fact that for most of these countries, the total number of children being born is going down.
  • The reason for this seems to be because in all these countries, the number of children being born through IVF was, contrary to the overall trend, going up.
